You should ALWAYS accept donations. This is not being being generally greedy, if someone wants to give you money, why stop them! I haven’t accepted donations yet, other than through Scratchback. I regret it, who knows how much money I could of made. Donors are people who want to see your blog flourish. Heck, they gave you cash. Give them what they want. Don’t forget to thank people who help you out too! They helped you the least you can do is help them by giving them a link!
Donation Services
Wordpress has several great donation plugins that you can search around for. However, if you do not run a Wordpress blog, or do not want to deal with the hassle, here are a couple other options.
Amazon Honor System
That little widget is similar to what you would see when you want to get donations/donate to someone with the Amazon Honor System. Amazon Honor’s requires a minimum payment of $1 and has a maximum payment of $50. You can pay with any major credit card and because all payments are processed by Amazon they are secure. You also have the option to refund your payment for 7 days. This is a very unique feature, and quite helpful if you are low on cash. However, Amazon charges some pretty hefty fees. 2.9% + -$0.30 USD.
PROS
- Amazon accounts can use one click
- All major credit cards accepted
- Fully refundable for 7 days
CONS
- To cover our administrative and processing costs, Web sites collecting money with the Honor System are assessed 2.9% of your payment plus a fixed cost of $0.30 per transaction.
- Fully refundable, donations can be lost
- Bank account, PayPal not accepted
PayPal
PayPal has their own donation system consisting of a variety of buttons you can embed to your blog or website. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes so you can pick one that fits. PayPal is used by over 100 million people worldwide, much more than Amazon Honor’s, so you may have a better chance of getting a donation. Plus, using PayPal gives you more options for donations such as all major credit cards, a Echeck from your bank account and your PayPal balance. Most people consider their PayPal balance “fun” money, so you just have to lure them into donating. PayPal accepts $2,000 worth of donations before making a user verify themselves.
PROS
- Login to your PayPal account for easy payment
- All major credit cards, bank account, and PayPal balance accepted
- Wide variety of other services
CONS
- 2.9 + $0.30 USD fee can be levied
- A bit more difficult than Amazon Honors
- A hassle to setup
Bottom Line:
Donations are hard to get but if you put a little work into it and know your audience you should be able to get a few dollars.

For PayPal donations (which I use, but haven’t received any yet…perhaps because I’m not using it enough) there is an online tool called BuckDrop that can be used to auto-generate a link that you can put in your posts to allow people to make donations for the sake of ‘coffee’ or whatever. They can also edit the amount, so it’s pretty cool.
I need to make it more noticeable on my site.
Here’s the link: http://www.buckdrop.com

I really enjoy reading your blog! Keep it up!
